OPINION: Must English and Mathematics be a yardstick to get admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions?

By Muhammad Umar Shehu

English and Mathematics shouldn’t be a yardstick to get admission into tertiary institution in Nigeria why because there ample of people out there that are vary intelligent but they can’t be in tertiary institution just because they don’t have English or mathematics in their o’level result and also there a lot of people in tertiary institutions that can not offer anything.

Most of all these people that are opportune to get admission into tertiary institution can not offer anything but because their parents paid huge amount of money they are given expo or some cheats note to copy in the exam hall and some of them will not even write the exams but they are now in tertiary institution. But those that don’t have money to pay for that expo and cheats note will not pass the exams and this will make some of them to loose interest from the education entirely and some of them will go in to illegal activities that are baffling our Nation.

This phenomenon is something that we have to bring an end to because English is not a sign of intelligency, English is just a language. Their a lot of people that cannot speak a vary good English but they are vary intelligent and also there tons of people that can speak a vary good English but they are not intelligent so English is scarcely a language

Let’s take a look at the advanced Countries they don’t care about the certificate anymore all what they care for is what you can offer and Nigeria should be like that, atleast we have passed a stage where certificate matters rather what you can offer in the course of your study matters.

We have capacious of people that lost hope in schooling why because some of them wrote WAEC and NECO several times but they are not getting it right but they are vary intelligent, they can offer alots when it comes to practical aspects of a particular study.

Nigeria should apprehend that the English and Mathematics as a yardstick to get admission into tertiary institution lead tons of people into bad activities that are baffling our Country Nigeria toady. Because most of them if they failed time without numbers they look for another alternative to survive be it Good or Bad.

Tons of them have potentials but they don’t have opportunity to explore such potentials because they don’t have a chance to further their studies just because they failed English or Mathematics in their o’level result. And there tons of people in the tertiary institution that cannot offer but just because they’ve relatives or friends in the schools they are given admission to study. After all, those that can offer a lot are outside the world looking for means of survival at any cost because they already lost hope in educational sector of Nigeria.

Lastly, am calling unto the Federal Government Of Nigeria to take this issue into consideration and pleases to give people with deficiency a chance to explore their potentials and also to fulfil their dreams of becoming role models in our Society.
