Slapping Saga: A lesson from Mrs. Obianu’s action

By Bilyamin Abdulmumin

Depending on the individual peculiarities, but naturally, when one is provoked, the urge to slap becomes increasingly irresistible. Nigerians have been exploring this phenomenon from time to time.

Some slaps that made news across the country in recent years involved senator Abbo, Ordinary Ahmad isah, and now Mrs. Obiano, and Bianca.

Senator Abbo representing Adamawa North has become a poster child when it comes to slapping people recently. The senator’s incident was captured by a CCTV camera physically assaulting a shopkeeper where he went shopping. He went on to deliver some slaps to the other lady purported to be helping the first victim.

The drama immediately went viral which eventually made the senator eat off his humble pie by apologizing. Thanks to the CCTV camera mounted In the shop that captured all the incidents.

To avoid getting slapped of this nature, in the future. Avoid any form of altercation with newly assumed office people, especially young ones. And those who come to adult shops are more fearsome to mess with.

Some time ago, a BBC documentary, African Eye, focused on Ahmed isah, president of Brekete Family-a human rights program. He would become under public scrutiny since the giant media outlet checked on him. He was being put under gunpoint because of a video of him slapping his interviewee that went viral.

The slapped lady was accused of burning the hair of another girl alleged to be a witch. When Ordinary attempted several times to get her to explain the motive behind the torture, the lady continued to feign ignorance. Losing his temper, Ordinary Ahmad would throw all caution to the wind by descending on the lady’s cheeks.

But, the slapping of people has taken a new dimension, as now people to be slapped may take themselves- by even a catwalk style, to a place where they receive the slap.

During the inauguration of Governor Charles Soludo, on Thursday, Mrs. Obiano and Bianca face-off resulted in the latter slapping the former.

Though initially there was a twist in the tale, as the clarity of who slapped who was as clear as mud.

The source of the ambiguity began with NAN reports- from which the other major mainstream media relied to break the news. According to the report: “Mrs. Obiano stepped in and moved to the front row where the widow of Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu was seated and slapped her.”

The incident occurred out of blue, perhaps that was the reason behind the NAN miss report, thus making the media reporters in a difficult position to video the saga without any ambiguity. All that can be seen is that Mrs. Obiano left her seat, in a catwalk style, straight to where Bianca was sitting, the next thing heard was a slap, but who slapped who became unclear. But judging by the circumstances, the NAN reporter assumed Mrs. Obiano had made the slap.

However later reports revealed the actual slapper:

“What are you doing here? Mrs. Obiano asked Bianca Ojukwu.

“You said we will never win the governorship and here you are. You are a witch” Ebelechukwu Obiano told Bianca Ojukwu.

Irked with the statement Bianca instantly slapped her and a fight ensued between them at the high table.

What any trouble seeker needs to put in mind is that: “action and reaction are equal but opposite”. Therefore whenever one sets out to look for trouble, he or she should know that provocation is more than capable of invoking a slap, so to avoid the backlash, advisably, one should give enough space between himself and the provoker.

Senator Abbo, and Ordinary Ahmed came under public criticism as the result of their slaps, but in the case of Mrs. Obiano vs Bianca reverse was the case as It is actually the slappee that was made the subject of mockery. One Nigerian reacted thus: ” wow a beautiful send-off and matching out celebration to Obiano’s wife. Congratulations to her”
