CHAPTER ONE

The weekends are always cozy and calm but this particular saturday was hell for Farida. The morning was still young and cool, not much doing.

After a quick breakfast, the couple had climbed back into bed, looking forward to another lazy morning of cuddling and tossing on the bed.

Bello noticed his wife was staring into the air and also lost in thoughts.

“Hey babe, am here, what are you still thinking about”? He asked her putting up a bright smile.

My love, am just worried about our childless life. It’s been 7 good years and yet no issues. She said worried.

Comon am not complaining…’he started but was interrupted by her’, your mum is complaining and am beginning to get scared.

Everything will be fine, just have faith. He said quietly trying to give her assurance and a rest of mind.

She wiped off drop of tears from her face and a smiled graced her chin.
He pulled her over to his chest and they maintained that position until they heard noises coming from downstairs.

Mama had bagged into her son’s sitting room and kept raising her voice.

“Where are the men in this house? She shouted”.

The couple ran downstairs and were not surprised to see mama ranting, they were already used to that.

Mama welcome, Farida said but a deadly look was the reply she got from mama before she added, “keep your greetings to yourself, all I want is to walk in here and be welcomed by my grandchildren and not a man like you”.

Mama please stop referring to my wife as a man. Bello chipped in…..

Shut up, I don’t blame you. She has bewitched you and that’s why you are not in your right senses to see that this is not a woman but a man. “Mama said sizing Farida with her finger”.

If she is a woman, let her prove it by giving me grandchildren, is it too much to ask for! I was barely two months as a bride when I took in. ‘She added without knowing what effects her words had on Farida who had been shedding tears’.

She was speechless and hurt. Why can’t mama understand that it is God who gives children.

The years rolled by rather quickly that she didn’t had time to reflect on her life.
Her mother in-law has been her worst nightmares.

Mama walked to the door and opened it. Come in, she said and a lady walked in. “The couple stared devastated”.

My son, do you know this lady here? She asked sadly pointing a finger at the lady.

Ofcourse I do, isn’t she Husna, your house help. He replied vehemently.

So have you ever had anything to do with her? She asked again this time sounding bitter.

No ma, I can’t remember ever having anything to do with her other than errands when am at your place. ‘He replied’.

“Ahh uncle Bello, remember that night you forced yourself on me when mama traveled to Abuja”. The lady lamented…..

What! You must be mistaken. Bello bellowed almost angry with a widened eyes.

‘Farida just stood there like a statue. Her head aches as she tried to comprehend what was happening right before her or was she day dreaming?’

Did you or did not visit while I was away to Abuja? Mama asked impatiently.

Well I could remember I visited but I can’t recal having anything to do with her besides I was a bit stressed so I had one or two things to drink before leaving the office that day. “He replied as he stole glances at his wife”.

Now I get it, you were drunk and that explains why you can’t remember forcing yourself on Husna. Well I don’t care if it was on purpose or not. Husna here is pregnant and she claimed you are responsible and that’s final. I don’t want this matter to go beyond here. “Mama said with finality”.

“Farida eventually raised her darkened red eyes, Bello saw sadness there and his heart sank”…

No! No!! No!!! Farida exclaimed and ran upstairs forcing her feet to move.

He went after her, mama and Husna just smiled and packed their luggagges to the guest room.

Babe please hear me out, I have no idea of what they were talking about. Bello said but his wife remained adamant.

She opened her wardrobe and started packing.
Please you can’t leave me just like that, how do I cope with your absence. He kept pleading but she maintained silence and continued what she was doing……
